Colosseum

The Colosseum in Rome,Italy was built nearly 2000 years ago.In ancient times people came here to be entertained. They watched hand-to hand fighting between men, contests between men and animals and huge displays of mock naval battles.

The Colosseum was one of the most famous buildings of ancient Rome. It is proof that the Romans were skillful builders. This huge building is oval in shape. It is about 620 feet(190 m) long, 510 feet (155 m) wide and 160 feet (50 m) high. Its four levels could hold more than 48,000 people.

The ancient Romans came to the Colosseum to watch men fight with wild animals. Specially trained men, called gladiators, also fought each other here. The ceremony that marked the Colosseum's opening in AD 80 included 100 days of games. Many men and animals lost their lives.

Canvas was used to cover the top of the Colosseum to protect spectators from the sun or rain while they watched the events. The center of the arena was designed so that it could be flooded and mock naval battles could be held. With 80 entrances, the spectators could enter and leave very quickly.

The Farmer

In India the farmer is generally a humble, simple villager, who has had a very little or no schooling and in some cases who does not even know how to read and write.

So people who live in towers rather look down on him and call him ignorant. But h is not ignorant of his work, though he may not study like a student. He knows his load thoroughly and he knows how to make it bring forth good crop. He has got his knowledge of farming from his father and has learned it by practical experience and so he is a skilled workman, who knows many things of which town-dwellers are quite ignorant and he is an important man..

Without him we should starve. The whole nation depends on the farmers for food. If they did not work, where could we get our bread, rice, sugar, fruit, vegetables and milk from? The town-dwellers, however clever they are, would soon starve if the farmers did not send their wheat and maize, milk and eggs, rice and vegetables into the markets. 

The farmer’s work is varied by the seasons. When the first monsoon rains have softened the soil, he sets to work ploughing his fields and planting maize or Indian corn, sugar-cane and cotton for the autumn harvest.

Kantha Art

'Kantha' actually means 'embroidery quilt'. The state of Bengal is famous for 'Kanthat art'. The Sanskrit word 'Kantha' means, rags. It is a cottage industry and is also a form of famous art. The old discarded cotton sarees, dhotis or bed spreads are put one on top of the other and are quilted and embroidered.

'Kantha' embroidery uses only the running stich. Black, deep blue and red are the colours used. These colours stand for three basic aspects of nature; earth, sky and space. The designs are often lotus flowers, creepers, foliage and animal figures, They are found on sleek shawls sarees and bags. Today the 'Kantha' art is famous all over the globe.

The Teledrama I like most

"Small Wonder" is an interesting teledrama. Small children, young boys and girls and adults like the programme very much. It is telecasted every Saturday on Star TV at 9.pm.

The most interesting character in this story is the small girl Vicki. She is not a real human being. She speaks without showing any emotion. There is no rise and fall in her speech tune. She is a robot child. She was made by her engineer 'Father'. Her 'Mother'and 'Brother' are very fond of her. Vicki is very beautiful intelligent and quick witted. She is smarter than any others in the series. The episodes every week is spun around some funny event . Some outsiders come into this family of four and cause some trouble to Vicki's 'Father' , 'Mother' or 'Brother'.

Vicki meets the intruder' challenges every time successfully because she is extraordinary; We know that she is a 'robot' - an electronic machine. The strangers are defeated by Vicki and her 'Parents' and 'Brother' are saved from troubles.

The actors perform wonderfully and provide the best humour. It is no wonder that "Small Wonder" is enjoyed by all viewers of Tele Dramas.

Television is a useful evil

Now a days in every home there is a television. There are number of channels and programmes n it. It has attracted all at home.

It telecast dramas, musical shows,films,cartoons,cookery,handcrafts,needle work,sports,educational programmes,news etc.

News is very useful to everybody. We can hear and see what is happening around our country and world. Cookery demonstrations help us to have tasty foods and needle work and hand crafts gives lot of knowledge to the learners and those who are interested in that field. The educational programmes are very useful for the children. The teledrama's films, musical shows and cartoon give entertainment to people, Children can enjoy and improve their English by watching cartoons and sports.

But some children are highly addicted to the television. They are queued opposite the television looking at cartoons and various sports. It increases obesity in children, Some get bad eye sight too. Not only children even elders also sometimes behave the same way. They too will get obesity which later leads to diabetes and high blood pressure. That is the only disadvantage at the television.

We should use the television in the proper way. So, I don't agree the saying television is a "useful evil".

A friend in need a friend indeed

Hi friends!! We have already heard a lot of sayings about friendship. We can't describe friendship because everyone feels it in different ways. We can't describe what is friendship but we must feel it.

A friend should be honest. He should be able to understand the other. He should be always helpful. You must select the friends carefully because we keep attention to our enemies but we don't think about our friends. Some time a friend can create many problems to you.

People have changed a lot. They want to be the best. So they do not want to see even their friends getting reached their goals. Most of the time our best friends do this. They are not true friends. Real friends are always with us. When we're smiling they're with us to smile.

When we're worried they too worry. When we're near to our targets they're there to wish us. They're there with us in happiness or sad, success or failure. And specially a real friends will say." I feel your feeling" that is the real friendship.

When we're in trouble our real friends are there to help us. Even if  they don't have money they help us with their kind works. So remember "A friend in need a friend indeed".

Taj Mahal - A Monument of Eternal Love

The Taj Mahal is on the southern bank of the river Jammuna bordering the city of Agra in India. Mogul emperor Shah Jahan built it in memory of his wife, Mumtaj Mahal. It stands in all its splendor.

Shah Jahan cherished his wife so much that he took her where ever he went. She died at a very young age. So he was in great sorrow and he locked himself up in his room. He came out only after eight days. Shah Jahan later built the Taj Mahal as a monument to prove his eternal love for Mumta

Taj Mahal is a multifarious complex. It comprises the mausoleum, the garden, the gateway , the mosque and the jawab. The jawab is a duplicate of the mosque. At the center is a square garden full of ponds, fountains, trees and flowering . We can see the reflection of the mousoletum in the ponds enhancing its beauty was constructed with marbles and precious stones were used to decorate the tomb.

Shah Jahan fell ill and his four sons fought for the throne. His son Aurangzeb was successful. He put his father in prison in the Red Fort. King Shah Jahan died in Prison gazing at Taj Mahal across the river. He died leaving to the world the Taj Mahal , a monument of Eternal Love.

The Kind of Love I Want

Nurse:”It was a busy morning, approximately 8.30 am , when an elderly gentleman, in his 80%, presented to have sutures (stitches) removed from his thumb.

He stated that he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9.00 am. I (nurse) took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would be able to see him.

I saw him looking at his watch and since I was not busy with another patient, I had a look at his wound. On examine it was well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redressed his wound.

While taking care of his wound, we fell into a deep conversation. I asked him if he had a doctor’s appointment this morning somewhere else, as he was is such a hurry. The gentleman told me no. He said he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife.

 I then inquired as to her health. He told me that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer Disease.

As we talked, and I finished dressing his wound.

I asked if she would be worried if he was a bit late. He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now.

I was surprised, and asked him, “And you are still going every morning , even though she doesn’t know who you are?” He smiled as he patted my hand and said. “ She doesn’t know me, but I still know who she is.”

I had to hold back tears as he left, I had goose bumps on my arm, and thought, “That is the kind of love I want in my life.”

The Condition of True Friendship

Everyone has a number of acquaintances; but no one has many friends for true intimate friendship is not common, and there are many people who seem to be capable of it. For a friendship to be intimate and lasting both the friend must have some very special qualities.

First comes unselfish love, which is the very essence of friendship. A man who is engrossed in his own interests and feelings, may, no doubt , like to have an unselfish friend who will admire him, serve him and always study his interests.

But friendship is a two sided affair, and lives by give-and-take , and no friendship can last long which is all give on one side and all take on the other. A selfish person is incapable of true friendship. The love and service must be mutual. Constancy is another important condition of a friendship. But some people have constitution ally. They take up an interest with enthusiasm, but they soon tire of it, and feel the attraction of some new objects.

Such changeable and uncertain people are constitutionally incapable of a life long friendship with any one.  Friends must be loyal to each other and they must know each other so well that there can be no suspicions between them. 

We do not think much of a man that dares not stand up for his friends when he is criticized behind his back; nor of the man who readily believes rum our and gossip against his friend. Friends of suspicious natures and those who are easily influenced by reports and whispers, can never make good friends.

There must be implicit confidence between friends. So that each can feel that he can tell the other his being misunderstood or betrayed. But there are talkative and communicative people, who can not keep a secret, either their own or those of others, to save their lives; and such people will never will never keep a friend long.

Finally, there must be perfect sympathy between friends-sympathy with each other’s  aims, likes, joys , sorrows , purists and pleasures. And where such mutual sympathy does not exist friendship is impossible.

84% feel more stressed at work than five years ago.

65% of office workers have experienced office rage.

45% of staff regularly loses their temper at work.

Up to 60% of all absences from work are caused by stress.

33% of Britons are not on speaking terms with their neighbors.

64% either strongly agree or agree that people in general are getting angrier.

32% say they have a close friend or family member who has trouble controlling [his or her] anger.
