Kantha Art

'Kantha' actually means 'embroidery quilt'. The state of Bengal is famous for 'Kanthat art'. The Sanskrit word 'Kantha' means, rags. It is a cottage industry and is also a form of famous art. The old discarded cotton sarees, dhotis or bed spreads are put one on top of the other and are quilted and embroidered.

'Kantha' embroidery uses only the running stich. Black, deep blue and red are the colours used. These colours stand for three basic aspects of nature; earth, sky and space. The designs are often lotus flowers, creepers, foliage and animal figures, They are found on sleek shawls sarees and bags. Today the 'Kantha' art is famous all over the globe.
