As a poet, he contributed a lot to the modern English Literature. Some of his constructive works are "Songs for Six Pence" IN 1929 "The Imprisoned Sea" in 1949 , "The Wondering Moon" in 1950. "The Taking Skull" in 1958 and "The Sea".
In his poem "The Sea, Reeves brings an excellent poetic creation vividly describing the different stages of the sea metaphorically comparing the sea to a hungry dog.
The poem "The Sea" is fabricated round the nature of the sea. It is really a vivid description about how the sea appears in the shape of a 'monster', the violence it makes etc.
The poem consists of three stanzas in which the poet draws attention to "three stages" of the sea , really three different behaviors patterns. In the first stanza , the poet mentions about the sea in the day time. In the second stanza, he draws attention how the sea gets violent in the night time. Finally, he takes the calm and silent sea in May or June.
Let's see the poem "The Sea"
The sea is a hungry dog
Giant and grey
He rolls on the beach all day
With clashing teeth and shaggy jaws
Hour open hour he gnaws
The rumbling,tumbling stones,
And "Bones'bones'bones'bones!"
The giant sea-dog moans,
Licking his greasy paws
And when the night wind roars
And the moon rocks in the stormy clod
He bounded to his feet and snuffs and sniffs,
Shaking his wet side over the cliffs,
And howls and hollos long and loud
But one quiet day in May or June
When even the grass on the dune
Play no more their reedy tune
With his dead between his paws
He lies on the sandy shores,
So quiet , so quiet , he scarcely snores.
